Anticipating change to shape the future of Geneva

For its first dinner of 2026, and as a continuation of its events on the future of Geneva, GVA2 wanted to address a key issue: mobility in 2050.

A source of tension if ever there was one, mobility is one of the main determining factors in our quality of life, our territorial cohesion and the economic attractiveness of our region. With the unenviable title of Swiss traffic jam champion, our city at the end of the lake faces unique constraints: complex topography, high density, sustained population growth and more than 2.5 million daily journeys. Add to this the success of the Léman Express, which will reach its capacity limits much sooner than expected, and we find ourselves facing a highly complex situation.

In his capacity as State Councillor responsible for health and mobilities, Pierre Maudet, gave an uncompromising assessment of the current situation, while also pointing out that solutions do exist and are already producing results, such as the success of the Léman Express, the development of cross-border trams and buses, and innovative car-sharing measures supported by artificial intelligence.

He shared his vision and conviction that mobility is a generational investment and presented us with structural projects such as the future Jura–Léman–Salève underground line, the transformation of Cornavin station and the strengthening of regional rail links. All these changes will take place over the next 25 years and, although they will cause disruption for us as users, they are essential to relieve congestion in the city centre, support a growing population and preserve Geneva’s assets in the long term.
